In the years that passed after Freeman’s death, many people started to leave Dallas. Coincidentally, all of these people had been at Elliott’s house the night of Freeman’s murder.
Not long after Freeman’s funeral, Stewart and Casey married. Carter’s family attended the wedding, along with several other people who were just interested in seeing a forty-six year old marry a twenty-two year old. A year after the marriage, Casey gave birth to their twin daughters, Jessie and Lola. A few months after their daughter’s births, Stewart and Casey announced that they were moving to Colorado. Carter remembered one thing Stewart had said before he left: “I may come back just so I can celebrate the Fourth of July.”
Not long after Stewart’s departure, it was announced that the Anderson family was moving to New York City. This news shocked many people, including Carter. Kathleen merely said: “Well, at least he can live amongst others like him.” Carter’s reply to this was: “He’s not like them at all.” Before Anderson left, he shook hands with Carter and said: “Take care.”
Howard and Selma reconciled their past relationship not long after Freeman’s funeral. After a few years, they married. Not long after this, they decided to move to Houston. Carter never said anything to them before they left. He never had actually formed any kind of friendship with Howard.
Cruz eventually became engaged to a woman he met at his work. Carter just shrugged after hearing this news. Cruz had already divorced three women, so it probably wouldn’t be long before he divorced a fourth.
Cruz and his fiancé moved to California. This was where their wedding took place. Cruz had sent Carter an invitation to the wedding, but Carter did not attend because it was in a different state. Instead, he just sent Cruz a “good luck” letter.
Victor Jenkins had been living close to his father, but he and Lucille decided to move to Kentucky to live close to his brother. Carter didn’t have much to say about this news. He never knew Victor Jenkins that well.
Not long after her husbands’ suicide, Katy and her children moved away as well. The only person who she spoke to was Mary. According to Mary, Katy had moved to Oklahoma. Carter wondered what Katy planned to with her life.657Please respect copyright.PENANAMX3k7Bym92
Carter, Elliott, and Randy Jenkins all remained in Dallas. The three of them had all formed a strong friendship. Carter and Elliott saw each other much more often then they had before, and Jenkins tagged along with them. Jenkins would never replace Freeman, but he was still a good man and a good friend.
In addition to many people leaving Dallas, Carter’s lifestyle had also changed. Elliott convinced a museum employer to give Carter a job. In the past, Carter had never been able to obtain such a job.
After receiving the job, Carter began to make much more money than he had before. His entire life, he had lived in a poor lifestyle, and that was finally starting to change. Carter could not only afford to buy more food to feed his family, but he was able to buy his very own house. He no longer had to pay rent for a broken down shack.
In just a span of a few months, Carter had gone from living in a poor lifestyle to living in a middle class lifestyle. Carter gave all his thanks to his good friend Luis Elliott. He wished Freeman were alive so that he could see.
Dennis had severely improved his social life. Not only was he now talking to people, but he was actually beginning to make friends. Carter was sure that Dennis could have made friends years before, but he didn’t look back on the past. Carter just was happy that the change had happened.
Many things had improved for Carter after his best friend’s death, but he would never say that meant it had been a good thing to happen. The death of Alan Freeman would always be a dreadful memory. Many people in the town of Dallas would forget that Freeman had ever existed. For Carter, the life of Freeman would be a very important chapter in the biography of man himself.657Please respect copyright.PENANAleTwXQUxqO
