She waited until we were on the road to speak. “I’m embarrassed over what happened.”
“You don’t have to be. This isn’t your fault, and you’re capable of doing your job. I want you to feel safe.”
Laura sighed, “Thanks for saying that. It’s seems like all I do is worry these days.”
“I’m part of the reason, so I want to put your mind at ease and deal with whatever we need to.”
“Okay. I need to call my Dad.”
“Go ahead, love. We’re minutes from the first location but take all the time you need.”
Laura replied with a soft thank you, tapped her phone, and hit the speaker option.
“Hey Princess, since when do you call in the middle of a work day?” her father asked.
“Cameron showed up at my job with flowers. He left upset and cornered me outside afterward,” the emotion in Laura’s voice went straight to my heart. I didn’t disrespect her old man when he offered cash to end our relationship, hopefully, he’ll handle the situation with his daughter better.
“Cameron called earlier,” her father said. “Why didn’t you mention Rex was the CEO of Amcor?”
“Dad, I was blindsided at work. Cameron made me extremely uncomfortable and your first question is about Rex.”
Laura was about to end the conversation, so I kept my eyes on the road but spoke, “Hello, Mr. Reynolds.”
“Rex, it’s been awhile.”
“It has,” I replied. “Laura is visibly upset. Cameron is pressuring her, and he’s not taking no for an answer.”
“I’m probably the reason he came back,” Mr. Reynolds sighed. “He was bent out of shape about you. I was shocked to hear about your success, but I told him you were a much better choice for Laura.”
“Dad, why would you?” Laura shook her head. “It’s been one thing after another. I should take the money Rex returned, resign from my job, and move. A new start will be good for me.”
“Princess, please, calm down.”
“I can’t. You’re overstepping and causing problems. What would you do if Cameron hurt me?”
“He wouldn’t dare,” the anger in Mr. Reynolds voice wasn’t directed toward Laura, so I stayed out of it.
“You don’t know what was going through his mind at the time. I was scared and can’t even think straight.”
“I’ll fix everything, this won’t happen again,” he firmly said. “I’ll speak to Winston, and we’ll figure this out.”
“So, your plan is to speak with his boss and threaten his job. I can’t figure out for the life of me, why you think any of this is normal. Please don’t call Mr. Crane. I’ll handle things on my own,” Laura ended the call and tossed her phone into her purse. “My Dad is doing more harm than good.”
