Ari walked into the library, observing the Halloween decorations and many books on the shelves.
In the non-fiction section, Ari found a book on power sources. She flipped from page to page, searching for the type of power source she saw in the basement. Finally she found it, and she read all she could about it.
GlowStone Power Sources
These are dangerous sources not to be touched. When one comes in contact with a mortal being, they only have eight more years to live. They are also given too-strong-for-this-world powers that can kill someone with one strike. These power sources were known for many deaths. The power sources were destroyed in 1946, but only one remained. It is hidden in a place no one has discovered. It has caused 18 deaths since 1946, and officials are still searching for it.
Ari sat down to collect all this information. Only eight years to live? She was only thirteen! She couldn't breathe. The information was too hard to take in. Powers?? Ari opened her computer.
What kind of powers are GlowStone victims given?
She waited for Google to load her request.
Access denied.
She huffed in frustration. "Might as well find out." She walked outside to the field where girls were joyfully painting each other's nails and enjoying picnics. Boys were playing soccer and reading books about video games. Everyone seemed so peaceful, but Ari was stressed and ready to choose her fate.
She hid behind the big tree on the lawn and tried to summon her powers.
"What are you doing?"
Ari jumped and spun around. Asher was standing there, holding a picnic basket.
"Asher!" She blushed immensely. It had been a day since their kiss, and she was still nervous to see him. "Hi! What's- what's going on?"
"I got us some lunch," Asher said. "You hungry?"
"Yes! And I need to tell you something. I'm in a lot of danger."
Asher and Ari sat down in the grass, Asher looking worried.
"What's going on?" Asher asked.
"That power source," Ari said. "It didn't just knock me out. It gave me abilities I don't need . . . and I only have eight years to live."
Asher looked at her in horror. "No. Not possible."
"Look," Ari said, handing him the book. He read it, shaking his head after every sentence.
"Nope. I'm not gonna believe this."
"I know it's hard to believe."
"I'm not going to believe it."
"It's eight years."
"Not enough."
"Look, I know this is harsh news, but we're gonna get through this."
Asher looked her in the eyes for the first time since reading the page. "I don't want to lose you, Ari."
Those words made Ari think harder. Maybe there was a way to keep her alive.
