Ari and Asher sat down in the library with world's best scientist, Cary Harrington.
"Cary, we need to know about this power source," Ari told her. "I need to find out what kind of powers I have from touching it." She showed Cary the power source and Cary shook her head.
"I'm sorry, dear," Cary said, "but I don't think I can help you with that."
"Please," Asher said, "you must know something. Ari is in so much danger. She only has eight years to live, and she's stuck with these powers she doesn't know how to use."
"Well, I--"
Ari felt a zing of energy bolt from her toes to her head. She can see Cary's thoughts. She could see the truth in Cary's mind . . .
"You know a cure," Ari said immediately. "You know how to cure me."
"What?"
"I need to touch the power source again with another person who's willing to give up their life for me."
"How did you know that?"
"Her powers might be reading minds," Asher said. "Ari, what am I thinking?"
Ari could see what he was thinking and she didn't have to use her powers to know. He wanted to spend his life with her. Ari wasn't sure she wanted the same.
"Not important," Ari said. "Since you wouldn't tell me, you're going to be the one to give up your life for me."
Cary had a look of horror in her eyes. She should be scared, Ari thought.
