"He's going to be okay."
Veronica's mom gives Lily's shoulder a squeeze before continuing, "He's gotta' really bad fracture, but he should be up soon once the meds wear off."
Veronica tries to hold her trembling hands in her lap. Luckily, a teacher broke up the fight and called the police just in time before something serious could happen. Veronica had watched him be pulled away by the same blonde boy who was with Lizzy and exit the gym before the teachers could withhold him. At 11 PM, Veronica could tell Lizzy was exhausted.
The whole night was exhausting. Veronica had passed out when he tried to grab her. His eyes were like knives stabbing through her. It didn't help he had blood all over his face and hands. She blacked out from the shock and next thing she knew, she awoke in the visitor's lounge at the hospital her mother worked at as a nurse. When she woke up, Veronica found a nerve-wrecked Lizzy pacing her feet back and forth across the lounge. When she seen Veronica awake, Lizzy greeted her with a tight hug crying.
Lizzy had asked if Veronica remembered anything, but all she could recollect was Lizzy and someone chanting her name. The voice felt familiar, but she couldn't put a name on it. It had popped up in her dreams multiple times but she was able to put a face on it. It seemed like the voice of the ghost and his voice resembled that.
Now, the two were waiting for Michael's awakening. Michael's left arm was fractured so badly that he passed out from the pain at the dance. Lizzy was obsessively preaching about how she should have never left them, should have never gone with a guy named "Alice", and should of been there with Michael and Veronica to "protect" them.
Lizzy stops talking and Veronica exams her. Her eyes were red-rimmed and glassy. Her usual raven, glowing skin was dry and lifeless from all the crying. With a shaky hand, Veronica softly puts it on Lizzy's forearm which makes her jump.
"G-go home..."
"Hell no! I'm not going anywhere."
"You have to...y-your dad will get worried."
"And? Michael got his arm broken because of me, Veronica." Veronica gulps as the guilt and sadness reenters Lizzy's eyes.
"I would have stopped him-"
"L-lizzy-" That was some crazy shit and it's not your fault.
Lizzy whips her head at Veronica who pulls away from surprise. For a while, with narrowing brows, she searches Veronica's face.
"What the fuck did he say to you, Veronica? What did you say to him? Why did he do that to Michael?" It was the most bizarre but desperate thing Veronica had ever heard from Lizzy. It was difficult to hear not only because she didn't know, but because Lizzy spoke as if she already knew the painful answers.
Veronica looks down at her lap and feels the tears coming to her eyes again. She feels like she was seven again, chest sinking from having to go through the familiar feelings of shame, hurt, and fear again. She mentally curves into a ball from Lizzy's statements. She knew this was all her fault, but she didn't know how. She didn't even know who that was. Shit, she didn't know he went to her school. Lizzy and her didn't say much to each other after that for an hour.
Veronica feels like shit and wants desperately to go home. She knew she should have never came to the Winter Ball. Even at the dance, the feeling of uneasiness sits in her stomach like an anchor. She had tried to ignore it to prove to Lizzy that she could have fun.
She should have listened to her intuition. It was always right.
"Lizzy...."
Both their heads lift up when they hear the voice. Lizzy stands up with a quickness.
"Lizzy..."
Lizzy runs towards Michael's voice without a glance at Veronica. Veronica begins to walk towards the room till she glances to her right. She's frozen in place as her eyes meet a pair of amber ones. His presence is the same as it was at the dance, weighing down on her with a dreariness. She imagines a storm watching over them.
When he takes a step towards her, she takes two steps back until she's up against a wall. She's so petrified and confused. She didn't know what it was about this boy, but she can feel his soul trying to grab her. He consumes everything in sight with just one look. She wonders if he touches her now, she envisioned that it would feel like plunging into a heating abyss.
"W-w-why are y-you h-h-h-here..."
He says nothing and just stares at her. A side of his face slightly twitching but growing softer with his eyes turning into honey. His lashes gracefully shadow over his piercing gaze and his jaw tightens. What was he thinking? What was he going to do?
"Go...a-away!" Veronica snaps at him, trying to put some courage into her face but looks down.
He lifts his hand and she flinches then he touches her face. The word vulgar came to mind but his scars and blisters only brought her at ease. She switches her attention from the floor to his face, and tries to find a change in his expression. Yet, it's empty again.
Frustrated, Veronica tries to move away but he grabs the back of her neck.
"Jacob!"
Veronica's head whips towards the left to the sound of the voice.
Wait, isn't it that the guy who-
Abruptly, the door to Michael's room slams open and Lizzy pops out with a suspicious look.
"What the fuck-" Lizzy frowns when she sees Veronica with the boy.
Her nostrils flare and she begins to stalk towards him clutching her fists. Pale arms wrap around her waist to keep her away from them. He's the same blonde guy that was with Lizzy at the dance. His wild curls bounce as he tries to keep Lizzy away from, whom she assumed, "Jacob". Strangely, he reminds her of Michelangelo's "David", but with longer hair and a stronger build. His blue eyes were calm even as he was holding a distressed Lizzy.
"Why can't you just leave her the fuck alone! Are you serious right now- let go, Alice!"
"I can't let you touch him, Lizzy-"
"You don't have the right to say anything right now to me," Lizzy's voice holds so much malice that it makes Veronica shudder," You waited so long to tell me and look what happened! He broke Michael's arm and scared the shit out of Veronica!"
"This is our fault!"
Veronica's attention returns to the figure blocking her view. He grabs her hand, and holds is so tightly it throbs. His back leans into her closer. Veronica can label the odor the boy was faintly soaked in. The smell she found so weird yet appealing at the dance. He smelt like patchouli and strong iron. She could slightly smell the metal but it was if she was imagining it. Veronica searched Jacob's face to find any hint of reaction or, at least, emotion in them but it was a blank canvas.
"Veronica, get away from him!" Lizzy wrestles out of the boy's hold and walks towards them ready to pull Veronica away from Jacob until he blocks her.
"Move."
Veronica watches the steady rise and fall of Jacob's broad back. He shifts his standing so that Veronica can't see anything that's going on. She couldn't see Lizzy's reaction. As she observes Jacob more, she sees red specks on the collar of his bomber jacket.
"Move the fuck out the way!"
"She's testing my patience." His voice booms over her. It's smooth, low, and empty. "Control her before I do."
"What did you just say-"
There's a halt in Lizzy's voice. Veronica's heart thumps against her chest and she wishes she could see what's going. Unfortunately, every time Veronica would take a step away from him, Jacob would follow after.
"Get out of the way, psycho!"
"Lizzy-"
She can hear the desperate aggression in Lizzy's tone increase.
"Alice, tell him to move!"
"Jacob...."
It's disturbing how still and unresponsive Jacob is this whole time to her. He's only said one thing but he was giving off aa vibe she felt at the dance. The one during his fight with Michael. Veronica gulps as Jacob's hand squeezes hers tighter painfully.
"Jacob," She could hear the rough but cautious voice of the blonde boy," We have to go...They're waiting."
They're waiting? Whose they? Veronica didn't know why but she was curious about what he meant.
Veronica licks her lips slowly before finding her voice again, wanting to diffuse the situation before any of the staff come by.
"...Jacob." It comes out incredibly small, but it's enough to make his head snap towards her. Quickly, his eyes are like gem stones again and his face softens. He searches through her eyes until she looks down. She still not used to the rays of light and she goes weak in the knees. Suddenly, he plants something gently in her palm. The object feels jagged and beaded. If she squeezes tight enough, it could cut into her palm. Veronica's fear swims down her back as she feels Jacob leaning in closer to her again.
His breath feels cool on the space between her eyes and it's an eternity before he makes his next move. Finally, he bends down to kiss her on her forehead causing her knees to fail her slightly. Jacob begins to walks down the corridor, passing Lizzy without a look at her with Alice trailing along behind him. She watches Alice mouth a "Sorry" to Lizzy then lean into Jacob's ear, who gives no clue to what was said.
"Veronica."
The dazed and frightened girl whips her head around to face her best friend. The spot where Jacob left a kiss burns and she's nauseous but blissful. She notices Lizzy has calmed down a bit but a stoic expression replaces her anger.
Her voice comes out in a gentle but serious tone," You need to stay away from him. He's dangerous to the point I don't even want to tell you. Please. Please promise me...you won't go near him ever again."
Her expression doesn't change, and Veronica panics at the hopeless look in her eyes. She can only nod at her best friend's words but clutches the in her hand firmly.
