Chapter 46
Silence in the trial room.
“What?” I asked. “I did…”
“Speechless, yes?”
“You’re lying!” I yelled. “I would never work with you!”
“Misaki!” Amaya cried.
“It’s the truth,” Satoshi said. “All this time you were trying to escape a world you created. Such despair.”
“That’s not me! I would never be-”
“We were given vague information,” Akira said. “But none of that said Misaki made a world like this.”
“Well, it’s not like I was willing to share it,” Satoshi replied. “More importantly, Misaki now knows her Ultimate! Amazing! I guess that’s why you were so smart!”
“I would never…” My voice trailed off. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t want to believe it.
“Everything was real, Misaki,” Satoshi said. “Did you hear that radio as your fifth motive?”
My eyes widened. “You’re not saying…”
“Asami and you were friends,” He said. “That murder happened during your highschool years after that jerk pushed you off the stairs. But they arrested another classmate. You knew though, you knew it was Asami. And you defended her,”
“No…”
“You guys were friends for a long time,” Satoshi continued. “You guys were alike. Even in this killing game.”
“Don’t compare me to that bitch!” I yelled.
“Misaki,” Amaya said. “It’s not true, he’s a bullshitter. I mean, he’s Satoshi, you know?”
I was too scared. Too overwhelmed by this. All this time I was trying to find an escape. Figure out my identity. But…
“Such despair,” He said. “It’s troubling here and out there.”
“Shut up!” Amaya yelled. “You’re lying about everything right? I mean, the motives and all.”
“No, I’m not,” He said. “Misaki made virtual copies of stuff in the real world. Like I said, this place is made of memories from the real world. A digital version of everything.”
“What do we do now?” Katashi asked.
“Well, that’s simple,” Satoshi replied, with an evil grin. “Monokuma did say this will end with a vote. So, let’s vote!“If you look in front of you, there’s two buttons ESCAPE and REPEAT. If you choose ESCAPE, You get to go back with removed memories and get captured by the Future Foundation, or choose REPEAT to stay here and we can restart this killing game!”
“Restart?” I asked.
“I said I can regain everyone’s consciousness,” He replied. “So everyone will be revived with memories removed and the killing game will start again, and again, and again, and again! Every time will feel like your first time when in reality it could be fiftieth! So what’s your bet?”
“What do we do?” Katashi asked. “The Future Foundation-meaning Akira and Isamu’s memories will be removed and they will capture us.”
“But none of that could be real right?” Amaya asked. “Are you suggesting we repeat this over and over?”
“Guys,” Akira said. “We can vote to get out. Even if it removes my memory. Capturing probably isn’t the best idea. In fact, maybe we can believe, right? If we have hope we can overcome despair and stop all of this.”
“That’s right,” Isamu agreed. “Even if you return to your real bodies, maybe things can change.”
Akira nodded. “Let’s get out of here.” She pressed ESCAPE.
Isamu also pressed ESCAPE.
Satoshi laughed. “Wow, two votes already. Things are getting exciting!”
“Katashi, will you join us?” Isamu asked.
He rolled his eyes and pressed ESCAPE.
“Amaya, do you trust us?” Akira asked. “I know this is a lot, but it’s better than staying here for eternity.”
“You got that right.” She said before pressing ESCAPE.
“Misaki,” Akira said. “Will you join us? This could end. You guys can return and we can figure it out. As long as we have hope. That’s what the Future Foundation is.”
Everyone was looking at me. Why are they so dependent? When I’m the one who…the one who… “No.”
“What?” Amaya asked.
“I…can’t.” I said.
“Why not?” Akira asked.
“If I return to the real world, I will probably create more despair for everyone, use my hacks to create another world for danger. I can’t risk that.”
“Misaki,” Amaya started. “It’s not your fault-”
“It is my fault!” I cried, cutting her off. “If I made this world, then that means I put us in this situation. If it weren't for me, Kenji would’ve still been alive. I ruined everything!”
“M-Misaki!” Akira stammered. “Don’t carry the blame, it’s like Amaya said, it’s not your fault. It’s Satoshi’s. He planned it, right? And the three of us came here by our free will.”
“Still, a person like me doesn’t deserve to go out there.”
“Are you saying we should just stand here forever?” Katashi asked.
I shook my head. “No. You guys can leave. But I…I…” I realized I have the knife I stole from Akira’s room. Surely this will crash the system. Or me. Since it’s violating the rules.
“Wh-What are you doing?!” Satoshi asked. I swiftly dodged him and jumped. Then I jammed the knife into the Monokuma.
“Misaki!” Akira called.
The world started to glitch and crack.
“What did you do?!” Satoshi asked.
