Chapter 48
(Misaki)
A building structured around me. I was in a hallway. I had no idea what this place was. I couldn’t recall. But it didn’t matter. I was going to stay here anyway after all. That’s why I thought I should destroy the system. It was a guess, why else would Monokuma not let us touch him? Anyway, I was here. Alone. No one needed to worry about me anymore. Not after what I’ve done. I waited. And waited. Then something glitched in front of me. No…someone. I took a step back. Straight violet hair. Blood red eyes hungry for violence. Formal clothing. Asami Endo was in front of me. Was this part of the damaged system?
“Asami-”
“We’re here again!” She exclaimed. “Do you remember, Misaki? You should, right? Didn’t I tell you the truth will soon commence?”
I didn’t reply.
“This place is our highschool,” She said. “I recalled every moment here! Our moments. We were great. I would do favours for you as a desire. Doesn’t that sound amazing?”
“Sounds amazing?” I asked, exasperated. “You thought it was amazing to dismember a highschool girl and shove it in her own locker? Is that what you call friendship?!”
“I’m sure you know why I did that.”
“So what if she pushed me down the stairs?” I snapped. “That’s no reason to murder her just for another classmate to get arrested. It’s all your fault. I hate you.”
She looked stunned. “You hate me?” She smiled. “Misaki, don’t forget that you’re just the same. After all, you knew I did it. Yet, you didn’t tell the police, right?”
My eyes widened in horror.
She cackled. “See? You and I are a duo. We’re two sides of a coin.”
She glitched and appeared behind me. Before I could do anything, she wrapped her arms around my body. I tried to resist, but she kept me still.”Misaki, if you run away, who will be there for you? No one, right? I was the only one who cared about your intentions. So please don’t run away. Do you like being alone? Being excluded? Not important enough?”
I couldn’t answer. My breath was getting short as she leaned her face closer to me. “Let’s stay here and enjoy this world. It’s ours after all. Let’s stay together, until it’s just the two of us!”
My body stopped resisting. I couldn’t think. Couldn’t reply.
“Hmm, you finally stopped moving,” Asami said, amused. “That’s good. But I like your voice, so let’s talk.”
I don’t want to talk to her. But there’s nothing much. Nothing will happen if I run.
“Misaki,” She said, stroking my hair. “Do you like red? That shade of your hair is the same as blood. Don’t you like blood?”
Just then, she went flying in the air. “AHHH!!”
I turned. Akira had a fist. She must’ve punched her. Asami glitched away.
“Akira?” I asked. “What are you doing here?”
“Don’t get carried away,” She told me. “Let’s go. I’m here to save you.”
“Why?” I asked. “I destroyed the system for a reason, you know.”
“Misaki, this place is eating itself up.”
“Good.”
“What?”
“I deserve to disappear,” I replied. “You knew, right? That I did all of this? So just leave.”
“I won’t allow that,” She said. “As a member of the Future Foundation. I will save the students alive.”
“Why?” I asked. “Why would you sacrifice yourself, for me? If I go back, I will remember everything. I will make things worse. I will make things for despair. I will ruin everything.”
“But you will also remember the killing game,” Akira said. “That’s why I came back. Since the system crashed, we all remember. You don’t have to carry the weight on your own, Misaki.”
“But I do!” I argued. “It was my fault that I created this!”
“True, but…who initiated the killing game?”
“Huh?”
“Who made you guys the segments of despair?”
I didn’t reply. But I knew the answer.
Akira knew too and nodded. “Exactly. It’s his. That’s why we’ll defeat him once we leave.”
“But wouldn’t I get captured?” I asked.
“We’ll decide, but it’s unclear,” Akira replied. She held out her hand. “Come on, let’s leave.”
With tears in my eyes, I held her hand while we ran. We were back in the maze. Specifically the trial room. The voting was still there, but crumbled.
“I have to vote?” I asked.
Akira nodded. “This seems to be the way. The other code is broken.”
Hesitantly, I voted to leave.
The place began to disappear around me. I ran toward Akira and hugged her out of fear, until I saw nothing left.
