The cute one’s here!
That’s right, it’s me. Katerina Petrova aka Katherine Pierce.
Opening the blood dealing business with my darling Care-Bear was pretty easy once I found out just how many of my people would be interested in buying laced blood. After setting up a base in New Orleans, I left to travel up the eastern seaboard. I was searching for humans and vampires alike that needed work. We’ll get into more details about the inner workings of the new… organization later.
However, because of my current status as a fucking fugitive I still needed to be super careful. As much as I just loved conducting business in the shadows, I would still much rather have the weight of Klaus’ revenge lifted.
Imagine my surprise when I got word of a cure for vampirism and that my dull bitch of a doppelgänger had called dibs on it. Not fair if you ask me, but whatever. I followed the Mystic Falls gang - not Care-Bear - all the way to some random island off the Nova Scotia mainland, where I stole the cure with the intent to trade it for my freedom.
However, in order to do that I would need the help of my on again off again lover. Elijah Mikaelson. We were on again and had been spending quite a lot of time together in this small town up in Pennsylvania. Hopefully, this would be the start of us leaving the on again off again routine behind. Not only would he help me get my freedom, he was actually interested in my business and the associates I made nice with in New Orleans. Unfortunately, my shadow self and her original barbie sidekick found me while my lover was away on business.
Did I mention that I killed the littlest Gilbert too? No? More on that later then.
“Where’s the cure?” Elena asked.
Can you believe it? Me. Katherine Pierce being bested by my shadow self. The bitch and Rebekah were holding me hostage in a small restaurant. I’m currently sitting here with a fork through my hand because these idiots want something they can’t have.
“Where’s the cure?” Rebekah asked grabbing my face trying in vain to forcefully compel me.
“I’m sorry, I’m on vervain.”
“Ooo I get to torture it out of you, fun.” Rebekah let go of my jaw, finally.
“Why do you two want it anyway?”
“The question is, why do you want it?” Rebekah asked. “Let me guess, to kill Niklaus.”
“I’ve spent the last five hundred years running from your big brother. I have no intention of being within sniffing distance of him. But since it can be used against him, I’m sure he’s just itching to get his hands on it. I give him the cure, he gives me my freedom.”
“Ohh, you poor victim.” Shadow self is getting on my nerves. “Where’s the part in your plan where you screw us over and somebody dies?”
“I have no reason to screw you over.” I really didn’t, but I just might if they don’t get the hell out of my way. “I know you don’t believe me, but it is the truth. People change, I’m not the girl you think I am.”
All of a sudden Rebekah lunged for me, reaching my phone in the process.
“I don’t have it on me!”
“I didn’t think you did,” the original said. “But I’m sure there’s something in this to help us find out.”
“Who’s Em?” Shadow self asked as she went through my phone.
“A friend.”
“It says here you’re meeting him at 2,” she said. “I guess I’ll just have to meet Em myself.”
Good luck with that. The bitch would have to do more than hiding the red streak in her hair and wearing my clothes to even get close to being me. Ugh, can’t wait for her to leave and die because she found out who Em was.
Of course, not fifteen minutes after Elena left, Rebekah was trying to get a rise out of me.
“You know what’s funny? I’ve always been a little envious of the legend that is Katherine Pierce, the way you could wrap a man around your little finger. The way Elijah betrayed Klaus for you, the way the Salvatore brothers stumbled head over heels for you, and yet here we are all these years later in a town that you have to compel into liking you.”
She began to chuckle. Ugh, bitch.
“I’m sorry I shouldn’t laugh. It’s actually more sad than funny.”
“You name drop the Salvatores a lot,” I said winding up for the kill. “You sure you’re just jealous because I got to him first?”
“Fuck you, Katherine.” She hissed. “I am not concerned about whoever Stefan makes the poor choice of sleeping with.”
“Funny how you already knew who I was talking about,” I said with a laugh. “You know you can’t split the cure with Elena, right?”
“She doesn’t want it.”
“No? But you do, you want to take it?” I asked. “Are you really that dumb or naturally blonde?”
“I want a normal life again.” Oop, appears that I’ve struck a cord in her black heart.
“You mean, you want a do-over. Well, guess what. You can’t have it. The cure will only take away your immortality. Everything else you hate about yourself, you’ll still wake up with that in the morning.”
“And you won’t even be able to compel yourself a friend,” I said smirking in her face as I threw her own words right back at her.
Just then Stefan and Damon walked in as Rebekah was breaking my wrist.
“Hey, ladies,” Stefan said his gaze lingering on Rebekah. Hmmm, what’s that about? “Playing nice?”
“There goes the neighborhood,” I said with a roll of my eyes.
“I see you got Katherine already,” Damon said. “You’re losing your touch evil one.”
“Where’s Elena?” Stefan asked, slightly leaning into Rebekah’s space. Maybe there’s more to this here… must antagonize dear ole Becks about it later.
“So let me get this straight,” Rebekah said. “I tell you where Elena is, you shove the cure down her throat, and I end up in a box, right? I don’t think so.”
“What about you over there, smiley?” Damon asked. “Do you know where she is?”
I have to say, I’m enjoying this. Em definitely knows it’s not me by now.
“I can give you a hint,” I said. “Start looking at the town morgue, she’s probably dead.”
No one got the joke. Ugh, losers.
“She went to meet up with a friend of mine. You may know him, an original brother. Impeccable taste.”
“Elijah?” Rebekah asked.
“Elijah’s here?” Damon scoffed.
“Well you sort of have to question Elijah’s impeccable taste, if he’s friends with you.” Ouch, Stefan.
“Oh and when I say friend, I mean… friend.” The collective groans of disgust were music to my ears. “It probably took him about ten seconds for him to realize it wasn’t me, at which point he probably yanked her heart right out of her chest.”
“Alright,” Stefan said. “Where are they?”
I didn’t answer. I kept my mouth shut with a shrug.
“Rebekah, you do realize that if something should happen to Elena you have no chance of finding the cure, right?”
“Fine.” Damn, little miss original is pretty wimpy in the face of her would-be lover. “They were supposed to meet at the gazebo by the park.”
“I’ll go find him.” Stefan got up to leave.
“You deal with Elijah,” she said. “Katherine will take us to the cure.”
“No, she won’t.” I said referring to myself in third person for effect. “The cure’s my one chance to win my freedom back from Klaus.”
“You’re gonna broker a deal with Klaus?” Damon asked in disbelief.
“No, she’s gonna get Elijah to broker the deal for her. That’s why you need your little friend, isn’t it. Some things never change, Katherine.”
“See, this is why Stefan was always the one I chose. So smart,” I teased the group before turning to my former flame. “Why do you care about my shadow self so much, Stefan? You’ve been eyeing the blonde bombshell over here ever since you came in. Don’t think I didn’t notice.”
“WHAT?!” Damon exclaimed incredulously, turning his accusatory glare onto his little brother. “Stefan, are you insane?”
“Hell, you’ve been in love with her since the 20s. But unfortunately, you didn't remember all that. Am I right?” I sat back to inspect my pretty nails. Did I mention that Angel and Care-Bear got me into acrylics? I’ve really got to update you guys on my day to day! "It's okay to want her back, Stef. It's also okay to admit that it's what you've wanted for awhile."
“I have no idea what you are talking about, Katherine.” Stefan narrowed his eyes, not at all denying what I was saying. “Back to the topic at hand, I’ll go find Elijah. You two deal with her.”
If these idiots want me to take them to a cure, then I will do that.
“Fine,” I said. “You have to follow me, though.”
I took them to this quaint little house I had been living in. Wasn’t much, but it served its purpose.
“No sudden moves, no tricks either. No Katherine-ing,” Damon said as we all walked inside right passed my little aquarium.
Rolling my eyes, I stepped over to the bookshelf where I kept my safe.
“Wow,” he said. “A quilt and a fish aquarium. Who the hell are you?”
I finally opened the safe and oh look, there’s no cure here. Time for another dramatic performance from yours truly.
I grabbed around in faux shock. “It’s gone. The cure, it was in the safe but its not there.”
“Not falling for it,” Damon said mimicking a buzzer. “Where is it, Katherine?”
“I swear it was in the safe!”
“What, just like Elijah’s really your boyfriend and this is really your life?” Damon asked. His tone dripping in sarcasm. “For all we know this isn’t even your house. It doesn’t look like the Katherine I know.”
“Maybe, you don’t know Katherine at all,” I said. “Did it ever occur to you that you have no idea who I really am?”
“Did it ever occur to you that you’re not that deep?” Damon asked. Ouch, I could be deep if I wanted. “This whole small-town girl thing, we all know its an act.”
It is, but the wonder twins don't know that do they? What’s surprising, though, is that Rebekah hasn’t said a word since that whole bit with Stefan earlier. Curiouser and curiouser.
“Where’s the cure?” Damon asked menacingly.
I just looked at him. If they want it, they can go look for it. That must have gotten to little miss original because the bitch just tried to use vamp speed to kill me.
“Woah woah. Hang on,” Damon said stopping her. “We need her alive if the cure’s not here. You check upstairs, I’ll check down… I got this.”
I merely watched as Rebekah sulked her way up the stairs.
“So, if I was a paranoid, distrustful, sociopath… where would I keep my most prized possession?”
“This should be fun.” I laughed. I’m just going to wait here until he finds my surprise.
“Because I’d want it to be close, but not on me.” Damon walked around picking up random objects. “Accessible, but not obvious. I’d want to keep it safe, but not so safe that it’d be too difficult to grab and run.”
Yesss, that’s it. He’s about to get his surprise.
“Well, that is a fancy little treasure chest, in a tank with no fish. I think I’m gonna have to check that out…”
Time for another award winning performance. I feigned distress as the idiot looked at me, as if he had finally found what everybody was looking for.
“Ahh! Vervain water.” He shook his hand in pain. “Looks like we have a winner.”
Here we go.
While his back was turned I ran up to him and forced his head into the tank, making sure he was good and out of it before knocking him to the ground. I fished the chest out of the water and almost made it out before Rebekah ran into the room.
“Give it to me, or you’re dead!” She exclaimed.
“You’re gonna kill me anyway.”
Now for part two of the plan.
“So what’s more important to you, huh?” I asked as I opened the chest. I held a vial of liquid in my hands. “Killing me or getting the cure?”
I tossed it into the air.
“Make sure you think of what you could have with Stefan before you take that,” I said slyly over my shoulder seeing her pause before diving for the cure. "I am a Stebekah shipper, after all."
I didn’t even wait to see if Rebekah had caught it or not. I needed to get to Elijah and get the hell out of this town. Besides, we’d be long gone by the time any of them realized what really happened.
I found Elijah talking to my, cue eye roll, shadow self. That just won’t do.
Sneaking up behind her, I broke her neck and watched as her body fell to the floor.
“Sorry,” I said with a smirk. “I got held up.”
Uh-oh. I’m in trouble, the way he looked at me told me that much.
“Oh come on, she could use a nap.” How the hell was I going to talk my way out of this one. “It must be exhausting trying to be me.”
“You killed Jeremy Gilbert.”
Dammit.
“Yes, Elijah. I killed Jeremy Gilbert. A bomb I’m sure she just couldn’t wait to drop on you,” I said. “Ironic since she supposedly doesn’t care about anything.”
“I care,” he said. “Do you honestly feel nothing for this girl? A girl fated to live the same life that you’ve endured? Now you’ve just taken away the last of her family, just as yours was taken away from you.”
“Why are you looking at me like I enjoyed it?” I asked. “Jeremy was collateral damage, I was doing what I needed to do to survive.”
“Is that what I am, too? A means of survival?”
Oh, no. He thinks I don’t actually have feelings for him. All because of my idiot shadow self. I’m going to actually kill her one day.
“Don’t let sweet little Elena get to you. She hates me, she wants to turn you against me and convince you that I can’t be trusted.”
“I asked you a question.” Ugh, I hate when he looks at me like that.
“No! Of course you’re not a means of survival. You looked out for me when I had no one,” I said trying to put all the feeling I could into my words. “You’re giving me a second chance now, when no one else will. I love you.”
Dammit. This is not how I wanted to say those three words.
“Elijah.” I tried to put my hand on his cheek, but he moved away. That’s when I realized something. “You don’t believe me.”
“I want to, it’s my disease. I just keep wanting to believe you, but how can I when at every turn you give me every reason to doubt you. I don’t know you. I don’t know that I ever will.”
“Wait, you gave me your word that you would talk to Klaus.” Oh no. Seriously? “I can’t make a deal without you.”
“Goodbye, Katherine.”
Wow, he called me Katherine.
“Katherine, hey.” One of my compelled townies opened the door. “What brings you by at this hour?”
“I came to retrieve my package.”
“Oh, of course. Like I said your secret would be safe here.” Before she could leave my sight, I grabbed her.
“Both of my packages.”
She nodded and left the room.
It didn’t take her very long to come back with a small velvet box and a large bag.
“Hey, um. All the secrecy, can I ask, what is it?”
Looking at my items, there was only one thing it could be.
“It’s my freedom.”
I have the cure, among other things, and now it’s time to apologize to Elijah. I saw him walking down the street and I had to run to catch him.
“Wait.” I could tell he didn’t want to talk because he tried to walk away from me.
“What do you want?”
“To tell you that you’re right,” I began. “I’ve spent so much time running and lying just to survive, that I don’t— I’m starting to believe my own lies. I don’t even remember who I was when we first met and I want to find out.”
I took a deep breath.
“You have the cure,” he surmised looking at the object I held in my hand.
“Yeah, and I can shove it down Klaus’ throat and try to kill him. But even if I manage to do it… I’d lose you and I don’t want that to happen.”
“How do I know this isn’t another lie?” He asked. “Katherine Pierce deceiving yet another man.”
“It’s all very simple really. It’s not a lie because I would never put myself in this position, to pretty much beg for your forgiveness. Hell, I even got revenge on the Gilbert family for you. They are responsible for Kol’s death. But, of course, sweet little Elena would never tell you that. She would never tell you about how they plotted against which original would be the easiest to kill in order to reveal the entire Hunter’s Mark. She definitely wouldn’t tell you how it was all her idea and how her little brother was just the gun while she was the one with her finger on the trigger. It’s because of how I feel about you. I’d like to think that you feel something for me, too.” I took his hand in mine. “And that’s why I’m removing you from the equation.”
“Huh?”
“I don’t know if you’ll believe me and at this point, it doesn’t even matter… I might not even survive what I’m about to do next.”
“What are you talking abo—
“I’m going to meet Klaus myself to trade the cure for my life,” I said interrupting him. “If I live through the experience, I’ll be somewhere in New Orleans for the summer before heading to the west coast. Maybe after some time apart, you’ll consider giving me a second chance.”
With that, I walked away with my head held high. I could hear Elijah calling after me but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. I needed to finally do this for myself.
