Getting to New Orleans from Mystic Falls took no time at all. See! I’m adjusting my perception of time just fine. Aye, that was a bar but I don’t think I’d be a good rapper.
I chuckled to myself.
“What’s so funny, love?”
I turned to look at Klaus. “Oh nothing, just finally glad to be out of Mystic Falls!”
“From what you’ve told me, the place was stifling you. I’m especially surprised that you actually lived here for a week during that debacle with the council.”
“Yeah, it was a lot. But, I got this sweet apartment and a dope university acceptance out of it. I’d definitely say that I got the best part of the deal,” I said.
“It is a very nice place,” he said. “Are you sure I can’t persuade you to move in with me?”
I scoffed.
“Of course not,” I said. “I won’t be living with you for a long time! Now, help me with my bags.”
I watched as he rolled his eyes but picked up my things nonetheless.
With a smile, I followed him inside.
Once settled in, I poured us a couple of drinks.
I watched as he took a sip.
“I’m surprised you know your bourbon,” he said with an impressed look on his face.
“There’s more to me than meets the eye, Nik.”
“Nik, huh.” He set his glass down and pulled me into his lap. “What inspired the name change, hmm?”
“Oh ya know,” I said with a coy smile before giving him a peck. “I just figured it was time for a change.”
“Change is good.”
“Speaking of change,” I began. “We just altered the entire nature of our relationship. With that comes some ground rules.”
“Rules are for the weak love,” he said. “And I, for one, don’t follow rules.”
“Oh, you’re gonna wanna follow these. They’ll make or break just how deep into this we get.”
He huffed. “What are these rules then?” I guess he thought he’s just going to oblige me for now. Oh how wrong he is.
“First things first, no more unnecessary killing.”
“All the killing I do is necessary,” he said.
“Yeah, so was what I did to save my sister from those witches but it had extreme ramifications. So did what happened in your case with the hybrids,” I said. “Actions have consequences, Klaus.”
He glowered but I could tell that he was at listening to what I was saying. This was a long overdue conversation and it was far from over… but this is a satisfactory start.
“Second, I’m gonna need you to teach me how to fight.”
“Absolutely not,” he said. “I know you can protect yourself but I’m not teaching you that.”
“You will teach me because I know that your enemies will pretty much become mine,” I said. “Unless you plan on tying me up and hiding me away, which I am not advocating for.”
“Now there’s an idea.”
“I’m serious!” I exclaimed slapping him on his arm. “Nine point nine times outta ten, your enemies will be older than me. Ergo, stronger. If something happens to me, it’s obvious that it will get your attention. I don’t want to be a liability just because I’m in a relationship with thee fucking original hybrid.”
“Hearing such language from your lips is music to my ears,” he said with a chuckle.
I glared at him.
“But, I understand where you’re coming from.” He sighed. “It pains me to know that the life I’ve led can cause you, a woman who deserves nothing but the best, harm.”
I sighed.
“The ruthless persona you’ve created for yourself definitely has it’s pros and cons. However, I’m here with you. I chose you,” I said. “I want this to work between us.”
“You have no idea how it warms my heart to hear you say those words, love.”
“Good,” I said leaning back into his chest. “Because you’re stuck with me now.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he said, his eyes crinkling around the edges as he smiled. “Would you like to accompany me on a tour of the city starting tomorrow?”
A smile pulled at the corners of my lips as I turned in his lap. “Of course.”
He raised an eyebrow at me.
Gently, I covered his lips with my own. The kiss turned passionate before I broke it off to lay my head in the crook of his neck. I heard him let out a content sigh as he wrapped his arms around me.
Tomorrow was no doubt going to be a great day.
