Chapter thirty-six
Novah
Okay, this isn't funny. Where the hell is he?
I turn and look around the living room.
My eyes meet the door.
Maybe, he's outside.
I walk up to the door and turn the bottom lock and then the top one.
When I push the door open I spot Matt inside of his black mustang.
Relief washes over my body and I exhale.
Thank GOD.
His face is stern and his mouth is moving, his words are very defined.
He's not the nicest when angry. I think back to the night at the carnival. As much as I thought I despised him, that night, that was the first time I caught a glimpse of his soft side, the side he rarely showed back then.
I walk towards the car and he smiles.
He rolls down the window.
"Hold on one second," he says towards the phone, lying on the console.
Oh. He's talking on the phone.
"Ready to go?"
"Yeah. I thought you'd left. I got really worried,"
"Nope, still here. Go get your things,"
"Okay,"
I lean down and kiss him on the cheek before turning back around towards the apartment.
Phew. Good thing, he didn't leave cause that would not have been pretty.....
My dad. Why'd I just think randomly think about him?
Surprisingly. I haven't thought about him a lot in these last few weeks.
And I want to keep it that way.
I walk back into the living room and grab my bag and purse off the couch.
I walk into the kitchen to make sure the stove and oven are off.
They are both off. Good. I wouldn't want the place burning down when Matt just got it.
I walk down the hall and into the master bedroom to look around, make sure I didn't leave anything.
I scan the room and don't see any of my belongings anywhere around so I proceed to exit the apartment.
I walk to the door, slip on my shoes, and open the door.
"Matt!" I call out.
He rolls down his window.
"Do you have the keys?!" I yell.
He shows a quick thumbs up and rolls back up his window, continuing his conversation on the phone.
I wonder who he's talking to.
I lock the front door from the inside and shut it quickly.
I walk towards the car and open the passenger side.
"Hey," he says with a smile.
I toss my bag in the back.
"Anything important?"
"What?"
"The phone call," I point to his phone that is sitting in the cupholder.
"Oh, just an inquiry from someone I know,"
I laugh as he turns the key in the ignition.
"Ooohh an inquiryyy....." I mock.
He smiles and reverses the car out of the parking space.
"Yes, an inquiry, baby,"
He turns out onto the road, smiling.
"So, will you be okay with Ezra?"
"What do you mean?"
"I'm not staying. I have to pick something up,"
He rolls down his window and fresh-air floods the car.
"Man, I was really looking forward to you breathing down my neck in front of Ezra," I say sarcastically.
"What? Are you trying to impress Ezra now?" he asks moodily.
"No," I say, laughing.
"But I definitely am excited to see you in a bikini later," he says and places his hand on my thigh.
"Who said I was wearing one?"
He looks at me daringly. "I did,"
He squeezes my thigh softly. "I don't like being bossed around," he says playfully.
"And what makes you think I do?" I counter.
He halts the car at the stoplight.
"That moisture gathering between your legs,"
I close my legs together and he chuckles. "You like when I boss you around...." he adds.
"No," I say quickly. Yes, yes I do, so much. It gets me off......
"But you're stubborn and defiant,"
He takes a right when the light turns green.
I cross my arms and try and contain my smile.
"When do I get to boss you around?"
He chuckles. "You already do,"
He turns into the parking lot and I see my building. The dorm rooms.
It's a separate building, off-campus, but still not far from the actual campus.
Matt drives further into the parking lot, pulling up in front of the doors.
He tucks a loose strand of hair behind my ear, his finger lingering on my cheek.
"And remember, I will find out about anything and everything that Ezra does. So relay the message,"
I roll my eyes and grab my bag from the backseat.
"Actually, I'll come in quickly," Matt says annoyingly.
"You don't need to try and scare him. I'm not gonna fuck him. Where's the trust, dude?"
He laughs. "Nowhere to be seen, dude,"
"You don't trust me?" I ask in disbelief.
He runs his finger along my jawline, staring at my face intently. "No, I don't trust Ezra, not one bit. I'm stupid for leaving you with him in the first place,"
"I'm not a child. And get used to it, he's going to be living in the same building with me,"
"We'll address that later,"
"The hell does that mean?"
He smiles devilishly and leans over kissing below my ear tenderly.
"It means get your ass in there," he says and kisses my neck again tenderly.
I close my eyes briefly and take in his gracious kisses.
He pulls back. "Hey," his warm voice calls me. "Slap the shit out of Skylar for me, will ya?"
I laugh and open my door. "No,"
"Why not? I can't, so you should,"
"Matt.....bye," I laugh, "I love you,"
I lean over and kiss his lips quickly. I turn my body to get out of the car but he grabs my arm.
"Hey, give me a real kiss," that stupid glimmer in his eyes, he waits, expecting.
I lean into him, kissing him longingly.
"Mhmm," he moans into my mouth. "I love you too," he says after I pull back.
I kiss his chin and neck before pulling back.
"Bye stupid," I joke.
"Hey, hold on, where's your bra? I can see your nipples,"
"I forgot to put it on. Besides, I hate bras,"
He groans. "Fine. Go, before I change my mind,"
I hop out of the passenger side and walk around the car, my black bag, and purse in hand.
"Wait, come here," Matt calls out.
I walk back up to his open car window.
"You look hot," he says.
"Thank you," I snicker.
He looks from side to side nervously and I smile at his attempt at a compliment.
"Seriously, I love you," he says, face unwavering.
"Yes, I know,"
"Can I have another kiss?" he asks shyly.
I grin and kiss his lips again. "I love you, my beautiful boy,"
He smiles and I kiss his cheek again. "One for the road,"
He's grinning from ear to ear and its warming my heart to the very core.
"Bye," I say and turn, walking into the clear, double-doors.
As soon as I reach inside the building I realize that I don't know which room Ezra is in.
Shit.
Okay, I can find him. I'll just look around. The building isn't enormous.
I turn and look outside. Matt is still in the parking lot, watching me.
"Go," I mouth and gesture.
He sticks up his middle finger at me, while smiling and cruises, slowly, out onto the road.
I shake my head. That boy.....
I turn and walk towards the stairwell door, opening it.
I guess I'll start upstairs.
I sling my bag over my shoulder and trek up the stairs.
"Oh, hey, there you are," I hear the familiar, smooth voice.
I look up and see Ezra standing there, a small smile on his face. He sweeps his dark hair out of his face while smiling.
"Hey! I came to help you. Sorry that I'm so late. You're upstairs?"
"What'd you think you were coming to a job interview?"
I laugh. "No,"
"And yes, I'm upstairs, same floor as you,"
"How'd you know?"
"I've already met your roommate,"
"Oh lord,"
He chuckles heartily.
"C'mon, I'll show you to my room,"
His icy blue eyes put me in trance and I bite my lip unintentionally.
"Alright," I say and we walk up the stairs.
I swear, the lip-biting thing didn't mean anything.
