A bright morning despite the cold weather of mid-October, then there will be a short break after the exam to let the students breathe the stress they took studying for the exam.
For Angel Samonte, it is just but another week of her busy schedule. Not to mention school works. She needs to fix her schedule and review her material for their next school projects. It needs to be submitted after the short break. You see, it has not even happened yet. It will be her birthday before the exam.
She was in the middle of tidying up her bed when she heard a soft knock on her door. She moved and go straight to the door and opened it. Outside of the door is her mother, with her signature gentle smile. "Good morning, dear." Her mother greeted her.
Angel smiled and greeted her in return. "Good morning too, mom." She invited her inside the room and resumed tidying her bed. While her mother looked around, to make sure that nothing was lacking in her daughter's room.
She was satisfied; her daughter's room is clean and bright. "So, your dad and I have been talking about your birthday this week. And we wanted you to have a birthday party, just like your friend Hayley. But of course, it is up to you to decide. It's your choice, no pressure."
Angel felt so blessed. Her parents let them have the liberty of deciding, for their birthday, or anything, for that matter. It is one of the things she's grateful for. Her parents never meddle with their decisions. "Well, I think that I wanted to have a party, or else Yuri will cry." She said jokingly.
Her mother just looked at her and then smiled at her daughter's humor. "Do you want to schedule a meeting with the event coordinator? I know you have a lot on your plate right now. How about, I will make your party, and you give your input along the way? It's your party." She suggested.
"That's a great idea. Thanks, mom." She said she appreciates everything her mother does for her.
On the rooftop, lunch break...
"OMG! What are we going to wear? Wait! What's your party's theme? Hayley's a masquerade..." Yuri said she's vivacious and bubbly, such a good mood setter among the four of them.
Angel started to think. Her mother told her that she needs to think of the theme, or else the planning won't go through. She was deep in thought and her head was down. She looked at the pudding she was eating.
They had quite a spread today. There were sandwiches, chicken pops, fruits, different pastries, and teas.
"How about Paris..." Raeven suggested, then she took a bite of her chicken pop.
Yuri raised her hand with excitement and said, "Disneyland!"
Hayley almost dropped her cake when Yuri accidentally brushed her arm at hers. They were sitting next to each other. " Stop with your childish ideas. Do you think that suits Angel?" She said, being mean again.
Yuri frowned. "Then what? Are you going to start a tea party, perhaps?"
Angel laughed at that. What a ridiculous suggestion.
"My god..." Raeven said then rolled her eyes.
Yuri let an outburst. "You're all mean!"
And so, the day of the party came. Angel decided to have a casino-themed party. Her friends didn't expect that idea from her. But of course, this event is made with a cause. There will be auctions. All the proceeds will go to a charity she loved. Wish A Upon A Star orphanage.
All around, she looks. Rich people started to fill the tables, from cards to betting games. Name it all. It is noisy indeed.
Yuri arrived with her two cousins in tow. Khiel and Kier, plus Bryan. "Gel, happy birthday!" She said she is screaming cause of the noise around. She looked so cute in her pink dress, plus a cute bejeweled ribbon tied her bouncing hair in a ponytail. Yuri gave her a hug and a kiss on her cheeks.
Bryan and Kiel greeted Angel so formally. She smiled and thanked them for coming. Khiel didn't know what to do. He just greeted her. "Happy birthday." He said.
Yuri looked at them and she made an impatient noise." Oh, just hug her already." She said, then pushed Khiel forward.
Angel didn't want things to get awkward, so she initiated the hug, just a quick one.
Then Angel and Hayley came together. And greeted Angel.
"You both came together, so, are you each other's date?" Yuri teases them.
Hayley looked so sexy in her short black glittered dress. Her long black hair was let down, and it makes a shawl around her white slender shoulders. "Oh, I come with my darling here. She does not want to be alone. She's so sweet." Hayley said then, putting her arms around Raeven.
Raeven rolled her eyes and swatted away Hayley's arms. Hayley laughed. Yuri and Angel giggled.
Kiel was in his habit again. Ogling Raeven, Khiel bumped his shoulder into his younger brother's to warn him. Kiel was pulled out of his dazedness. It can't be helped. Raeven looked like a goddess. She was wearing a maroon little dress, fitted to her body, with an off-shoulder, and her hair was laid down, so her wavy hair gently swayed down to the curves. She looked like a Greek goddess.
"Come on, you can try to join in, go around the tables, make bets... I think this will be the only time we, as under-aged, can gamble." Angel said jokingly.
"Gel, when will be the auction happening? I'm excited. This will be the first time I will join bidding!" Yuri said, her round, adorable eyes twinkling.
Two hours from now. We're just waiting for some guests. For now, enjoy the betting games and help yourselves to some food and drinks." Angel said.
Angel was not able to sit throughout the night she is busy, along with her parents greeting the guests, and being the good hosts.
"Happy birthday." Suddenly, out of nowhere, a gentle voice of a man greeted her.
Angel turned around and saw Christian. He is smiling charmingly at her. She was surprised.
Christian smiled at her, his eyes a little turned down like he thinks it is amusing to watch Angel taken by surprise. "Aunt and uncle invited my family. I think all the people in the church are invited." He said.
"T-thank you... For coming." She said, a little out of breath. She's bewitched. This boy in front of her is real. They stared at each other for quite some time. Angel didn't hear the noises, nor see another human being except for the only guy who catches her attention every time.
"Excuse me. I think you are Angel Samonte. Happy birthday." A woman's voice said. Angel was pulled out from her daydreaming. She was now faced with a girl who looked arrogant and spoiled. She may even greet her happy birthday, but her voice says otherwise. She can forget Ashley.
And just like that, a dreamy encounter, but like a bubble, then vanishes in the air. It is only a second before she composed herself and, being the gentle soul that she is, thanked Ashley and told them to enjoy the party. Then she goes around the guests without a second glance at them.
"There goes the happy day for our birthday girl," Hayley said under her breath while drinking wine.
Raeven was drinking her wine as well. They were at a poker table, only the five of them, boys busying themselves.
"Poor Angel, she got herself a competition," Yuri said, feeling genuinely sad for her friend. "Hey, no fair. You two were drinking wine. Why can't I drink wine too?" She became whiny and was about to stand up from her seat intending to get herself a wine when suddenly Bryan grabbed her arm and make her sit back.
"You can't. Sit and behave." Bryan said, not looking at her but the set of cards in his other hand.
Yuri sulked and drank her orange juice in one gulp, and banged the glass down on the table. Bryan ordered the server near to get a new one for her.
Raeven just laughed at Yuri. Kier was always sneaking a peek between Raeven and his cards.
After two hours, Yuri became lively again. The MC announced the commencement of the auction was about to happen.
There were pieces of antique pieces of jewelry, paintings, furniture, and some weekend getaways and stays in the country house sponsored by generous beings. Some were abroad and some in the countryside.
What takes Yuri’s fancy was a piece of sapphire earrings that believes to be a pair of the same set as the engagement ring of a certain princess from another country was made of. Anything to make Yuri feel like royal blood.
“I will have it.” Yuri declared, with her eyes glaring around her. Threatening everyone who will bid against her.
They were now seated in a huge theater with a hundred seats available. A stage in the front. The four girls were seated together. The boys were at their back.
The auction started with an expensive 18th-century painting of a magical garden that was bought by Angel’s mother, followed by an old Japanese Katana that was sold to Raeven’s dad. The auction continued to sell valuable and expensive items until the item that Yuri was long waiting for came in.
“Oh my gosh, I need to get that!” Yuri said with her voice getting breathless because of her excitement.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, the bidding starts at 500, 000.”
“550!” Yuri shouted. She made the girls beside her jump at her sudden behavior.
“600!” Shouted the other.
“No!” Yuri said. She was about to shout when she heard another voice. A calm one.
“700.”
Yuri slowly looked behind her and glared at Bryan.
“700. Going once…”
Yuri looked at the front and shouted. “750!”
“Wait Yuri, do you have that kind of money? Uncle Cristobal will be angry at you.” Khiel said. Trying to stop his mad-crazed cousin.
“No way! Dad will buy that for me. I know he will!” Yuri said. Trying to throw a tantrum. She knows that the set of earrings will only go to Bryan’s current girlfriend, whom she hates. She already saw her, and she dislikes her because she looked like a flirty kind of girl with her whiny voice. There’s no way she will let that happen. And it is such a waste for such a royal piece of jewelry to belong to that kind of girl.
“800.” Said Bryan.
Yuri was about to shout when her maid came to her side and whispered something in her ear. She widened her eyes out of shock, then desperately looked everywhere. It looked like she was looking for someone. “Where- Did he say that? Are you sure?” She asked her maid.
“Yes, miss.” The maid said.
She stopped for a while. But then she slumped in her seat. She’s done with shouting.
“Yuri-” Angel was about to comfort her friend. But then Yuri suddenly stood up from her seat, then ran out of the theater.
The girls knew what had happened. Yuri’s dad forbids her from bidding for such a lucrative price for such a small set of earrings.
The birthday party ended with Yuri no longer speaking to Bryan.
