There are things that are certain for Raeven; Life is full of nonsense, and Independence is nowhere near her reach. She was not an optimist making anything possible for her. In the distant future, she will end up marrying a stranger that her family arranged for her, and not for her own benefit but for business's sake, to give birth to an heir and then watch her husband commit infidelity and then live an old age alone. That is how she envisioned her life to be. And it is real bullshit for her.
But after she met Angel, she changed her perspective, or perhaps her vision takes a full 360-degree turn for the better and a beautiful future ahead of her realized. Or so she thinks. Now she was all for planning to live her life on her own, no matter how hard life alone can be and even if her family disowns her for good.
She knew that she was alone from the beginning anyway, so what's the difference between living here and living alone outside this mansion?
"Do you realize that once you're disowned you will be cast away from here and you will be a commoner?" Her older brother said. They are eating breakfast, just the two of them in their spacious dining area.
She knew that it's an absolute consequence once she led a different life. "I know, but what's the difference between living alone and poor versus living like a puppet here? This is my reality big brother: Should I stay and continue to be a puppet with no direction in life or have a difficult life on my own but still, it's all my decision, I can do whatever I want..." She said although she was not that altogether convinced with her own decision.
"That's just lame, you are talking ahead of yourself like you know what awaits you outside this family. Do you even realize that you're still naïve? You don't know how to live like a commoner. You are used to a comfortable life. I doubt you can manage." Her brother said with conviction.
"Thanks for the vote of confidence big brother..." She was annoyed with how her brother viewed her decision. She doesn't want to look stupid in front of her brother, especially if he was the only ally she can ever have. She doesn't know how they ended up having this kind of conversation early in the morning during breakfast.
"Rae, you realize no matter how hard you try you can't win, with grandmother around... It's not like our family is a monster, don't worry they won't hand you over to some incompetent man." Her brother said, trying to make light of her worry.
They both know their grandmother is still the matriarch of this family, having the upper hand at that. Not a single plan passed without consulting her. Raeven was in the middle of sipping her tea, "yeah, that old woman... Screw her." She mumbled disgustedly. She felt frustrated and
put down her teacup in the saucer with a rattle. " I wonder how long that old woman can last, I mean it's not like we were given immortality by some god. Die already, grandmother!"
Her big brother almost choked on his coffee by her sudden outburst.
"Yeah, take that, big brother... How dare you doubt my ability, after all, I'm rebellious."
"You? Rebellious?! You have got to be kidding me. You are a spoiled brat but not the type to go against odds. Sure you don't go along with plans sometimes but that doesn't make you a rebel." He said. Then he realized something belatedly. "Since when did you become so brazen, talking like that? What kind of friends have you associated with?
"Yeah, because you are the rebellious one here, not me. Well, you wait and see..." She held her chin high and was a bit haughty declaring her statement of the year. "And what's wrong with the way I talk? I am talking out of frustration, I'm sure you also talk like this sometimes..."
"Are you busy on Sunday?" Out of nowhere, her big brother asked her. She was surprised by the sudden shift of conversation.
"Well, there's an invite from one of my classmates, You know Samonte who owns a department store?"
"Samonte? Oh, yeah. Is that friend of yours the only daughter?"
"Yeah." She said then took a bite of her food.
"You haven't gone to any of your friend's houses before. Is she that nice to you?"
" Maybe, since she is nice to me, well, she's nice to everybody."
Her big brother looked at her for a moment, he knows her very well; she's difficult to trust. And to consider someone a friend it will take years for her to let her guard down. But then he sobered up. "This Sunday grandma will be here, as well as our parents. It is a formal dinner, a family friend will come, and your attendance is of utmost importance."
Raeven looked at her big brother while sipping her tea. "If it is important and a formal dinner, then that should be about mine or your arranged marriage..." She guessed but seeing her brother's sober look, she confirmed what that formal dinner was supposed to be. She then pondered over his brother's love life. "Big brother, you wouldn't mind if I ask a personal question, right?"
Her big brother didn't stop eating and said, "hn."
Raeven looked down and played with her food. "You will not marry without love, will you?"
Her big brother looked at her like she was the biggest idiot that ever existed. "Sis, please, I'm not like you; heartless."
Raeven puffed her rosy cheeks and glared in his direction." Oh yeah, I'm heartless and you're a wimp."
"What did you say?"
That morning they wasted their spare time bullying each other. Until her brother told her that she will be late for school. On her way to school she was looking outside the car when it stopped at the streetlight and changed color.
A few seconds later she saw a familiar silhouette. Her heart almost jumps out of her chest.
That handsome guy!
He was looking tall and extra charming. He looked like he had just come out of the gym with his gym attire and a gym bag slung on his broad shoulder. And you can see how his well-sculpted biceps stand out. His handsomeness and hotness magnified a hundred times now that she's seen him up close. She felt hot and bothered and her cheeks were burning. She was not sure what she was feeling right now. Her stomach was churning, and she didn't know where to look. Good thing that the window was tinted or she doesn't know what else to do. This guy can make her blush!!!!
The car moved. Why was that guy able to make her heartbeat go wild? Why?! Is this love she's feeling right now? This cannot be. She should not feel this love thing. It will ruin her plan. She needs to leave her family's shadow and be free! She composed herself. She was not this fickle. She should feel nothing. She is the ice queen of her high school. Her brother should be right, she should be heartless.
