“I didn’t exactly tell you everything… Please don’t freak out,” I’m on my bed, on the phone with my “friend”, Alex, “but, they could call me in any day before the three months, and I just got a text from the enlistment office; they need me to come in tomorrow mornin.” My heart drops, I may have less time with him than I thought. He enlisted to join the Marines, and was supposed to leave in three months, but that message means he may need to leave sooner. They could just be calling him into the office to discuss things, we may still have time, but he may be leaving before I have a chance to tell him how I feel. This may be the last time we talk, because even if he doesn’t leave immediately, he won’t be able to message me. He’s going on a work trip with his dad, and he isn’t allowed to bring his phone with him. I do have one small consolation though, his cousin, Chris. I can use Chris to get news on Alex and—“Hello? You still there?”

I got so lost in thought that I forgot I was still on the phone, tears start running down my face as I say, “I’m here.”

“What are you doing?” I sniffle.

“Nothing.” Sniff

“Are you crying? Girl…Don’t cry, you don’t need no man,” I can’t help but laugh at his country twang and deep, manly voice. “Girl, you’re smokin hot, don’t cry for me, you’ll have no problem finding some other guy.”

“But they aren’t you.”

“I’m a snowflake.” And as if to prove this, he starts singing, in his own way, a song from Grease, one of his favorite movies. It reminds me of a promise I had made to him earlier that night. I promised to watch his favorite movie, an old one called Dirty Dancing. I need to remember him-- his jokes, his laugh, how he makes me smile every time we talk. I laugh quietly, sniffing back the snot running out of my nose.

“Do you remember the first time we talked?” he asks.

“Not really, that was a long time ago. But I remember thinking how handsome you are, from the very beginning. Seriously, you could be a male model.” He laughs, and it makes me smile. I can tell he’s nervous because he starts rambling on and on about random things.

Our call gets disconnected because his phone dies, per usual, and I wait for him to switch out the battery and call back, but then I see his messages. One specifically catches my eye, “I don’t want to lose you.” Reading this makes me cry more because I’m the one who’s losing him.

When he finally calls back, I’m in the bathroom, blowing my nose with some toilet paper.

“Hello?” I laugh as he says it in a funny voice.

“Hello…” I reply, also in a funny voice. We keep talking for about another hour, neither of us wanting to go to bed or say goodbye. Near the end of our conversation, I hear the message notification noise, and look to see a message from him, “I love you so much,” it reads.

“Hey Alex… do you think you’ll forget about me?”

No answer.

“Alex?”

“I can’t wait until I get married and have kids, an’ grandkids; I want to teach them to drive my truck, and hear them say, ‘Gran’pa…’ and have a big farm where I can raise my kids, and where my grandkids can play…”

“That sounds amazing… and a big front porch where I can drink coffee every morning and watch sunrises and sunsets.”

“Yeah…”

“I love you, Alex; please don’t forget about me.”

“I promise… if you keep your promise to watch that movie.” I hear the grin in his voice. We laugh, then say goodbye, hopefully not for the last time.

“I hope we can talk on Friday.”

“Me too, and if this is the last time we talk, remember… I’m always with you.”
